Does acupuncture work and how?
Yes, acupuncture has stood the test of time and is one of the most ancient systems of traditional treatment known to mankind. A report from the World Health Organization reviewed a number of clinical trials on this form of therapy and has proven its effectiveness in treating 28 common health conditions. Another sixty three conditions can be helped by acupuncture but more research is needing to provide proof.
From the western medicine point of view, acupuncture works by regulating various systems including the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, immunological, musculoskeletal and nervous systems. In general it has an analgesic, regulatory, immunestimulation and sedative effect.
How long does it take to get results from the treatment?
As a rule of thumb for every year one has had a condition it would take approximately one month of Chinese medicine to help correct.
What is the sensation like and how many needles are used?
The sensation most clients experience is only a slight discomfort for a brief period before an overall relaxed sensation. Rarely is pain experienced. Some acupuncture point locations are a little more sensitive than others and for these finer acupuncture needles are used. The number of needles used varies depending upon the condition being treated. This can range from five to twenty for each session. The needles are left in for the duration of treatment which can range from 25 minutes to 45 minutes.
What is the frequency treatment?
The frequency of treatments is determined by the amount of pain experienced by the client, the history of the condition and the constitution of the individual. This generally varies from once a fortnight to twice a week. After this time herbal medicine is often used to help with the condition.
